George Carruthers was an African-American physicist and space scientist best known for inventing the far ultraviolet camera/spectrograph used during Apollo 16. His work expanded our vision of space and helped capture images of Earth’s atmosphere from the moon.
His invention produced the first images of Earth’s ionosphere from space.
He worked for the Naval Research Laboratory for nearly 50 years.
